Accessible Playgrounds!

Accessible Playgrounds!!!

Finally more and more communities are realizing the need for accessible playgrounds! There are so many things that can be done to make it more accessible for wheelchairs and other mobility items to be able to let children play with other children. Inclusion is very important for kids of all ages as they only want what every other child has when on a playground.... FUN!! Just to see the look on a child's face when they go to a playground that they can get on and play with other kids, its priceless!! Most of the time the child who is able bodied has no hesitation to play with a disabled child in a wheelchair, they just see it as another way to get around. That's the way the world should look at it as well, we can learn a lot from kids!!

There are many floor plans and designs that have already been built and tried and have been successful. Schools and public parks should all have some accessible areas not secluded, but built into the play area that all kids can play on. If there is not an accessible playground in your area by all means approach your community leaders and request that they build one in your area. Like I tell most of the parents I come in contact with, this is your child and you want the best for them so don't take no for an answer. There are ways to get help to get one built, and if your community leaders see that there is a need and a true desire by parents to get one put in, you might get some notice. Remember when  trying to get the attention of elected officials, it is better to find other parents with the same wants for their child who also are voting residents. An elected official never wants to be the one to deny accessibility for a child, it doesn't look good for them! :-)
